On Friday, January 15th, the British Columbia Review Board released Brian Irving from the Colony Farms Forensic Psychiatric Hospital back into the community, this time against the recommendation of a hospital psychiatrist who wanted him kept there another year.
Irving was the driver of the vehicle that plowed into a Maple Ridge sushi restaurant on August 28, 2008. That crash killed Simon Fraser University student Maija-Liisa Corbett, 19, and 46-year-old Hyeshim Oh.
Even though faced two second-degree murder and six attempted murder charges, those were reduced to criminal negligence causing death and criminal negligence causing bodily harm, not that it made any difference. Irving was found not criminally responsible for his actions because Irving pleaded not guilty by reason of mental disorder — two psychiatrists testified he was suffering from delirium due to alcohol withdrawal and did not know what he was doing.
The icing on this cake? Irving is free to drive again — because the Review Board did not place any restrictions on his driver’s licence.
